Recharge Devices At Home Wirelessly With The Power Of Qi
Chances are almost everyone in your household has at least one wireless device. And they all have to get recharged. We’ve all dealt with the crazy morass of tangled and unsightly cords and having chargers lying about, not to mention the inconvenience of never having the right charger in the right room when and where we need to recharge that particular device that’s in the red zone at that particular moment.
Until now, there’s been one cable that we’ve been unable to break away from our wireless devices to make them truly wireless, and that’s the electrical charging cable. Well, for all you cord cutters, here’s another cord you can now cut. Thanks to companies like Ikea, FurniQi, and Desnahemisfera Studio, there’s new and fashionable home and office furniture available to make home recharging simple, elegant, uncluttered and convenient all through the power of Qi or AirCharge recharging. And best of all—wireless.
All About The Qi
Qi, is Chinese for energy, but in this case is an interface for inductive electrical power transfer over small distances—typically 1.5 inches—developed by an open membership of Asian, European, and American companies from various manufacturing industries known as the Wireless Power Consortium. Because no cables are involved it’s also known as AirCharge.
All you need to do to recharge is place your wireless device anywhere on the charging area or in close proximity and the phone and charger sync and charging begins. There are no cables to hook up to your device or to get in the way of what you are doing or for you or your cat or kids to get snagged on.
The technology is reliable and works with most wireless devices, except Apple products which don’t support wireless charging and require a special case and cable. Qi can also generate a fair amount of heat, up to a maximum operating temperature of F 140 which may or may not have some potential to cause phone damage.
Simple, Uncluttered & Truly Wireless at Home
What about the furniture? Swedish furniture giant Ikea has boldly stepped up with an array of products that make wireless charging sleek, simple, and even somewhat fashionable. They all incorporate the Qi charging pad, which, by the way, you can purchase separately to use on top of your current furniture (end tables, bedside tables, countertops) or build in yourself. They all make mobile charging easy and convenient. blend smartly into home or office decor, and they can charge one or several smartphones at once.
Ikea has a versatile nightstand SELJE which can double as a hall table, the two places devices seem to gravitate to the most and which offer a perfect recharging opportunity. Their NORDLI nightstand works both at bedside or as an end table anywhere in your abode. Both have a discreet groove running down the legs to hide the electrical cord, something all furniture should have.
If bamboo’s more your thing, London based Fonesalesman has the sweet little minimalist bamboo FurniQi side table which you can place your device on top of for cable free charging.
Ikea’s got a set of lights that will keep you lit up and your phone charged without any extra cable clutter. The VARV comes as both a floor or table lamp. The floor model has a built in side table to store and charge your device and the table lamp has a wide base to do the same, whether it’s bedside or couch side. The RIGGAD work lamp is minimalist and elegant, with an adjustable arm and lamp head and of course a base with Qi charger.
Aircharge’s Koncept Z-Bar task lighting combines the benefits of reduced operating costs and lower heat generation with an elegant slim line look and has AirCharge wireless charging integrated into the base.
They also make a wireless charging tray and wireless surface chargers.
